first of all, I don't think the camera in the iPhone was their main worry when creating it. But yes, the camera on iPhone's are pretty terrible. But I mean in the way that they tend to over simplify things on their products, which is bad for things you'd want to customize such as Computers, or phones.
But with a camera, everyone wants the same thing, good pictures. And if you have ever used a camera that you didn't buy from a waiting line in a grocery store, you'd know that getting the proper light intake, lens width, focus, all very small and tedious things, takes a while and you usually have to change all these throughout the day. I feel like Apple would be good at creating Auto Focus, lens adjustments, very high quality camera that are just overall user friendly and that don't require you to study up on before knowing what button you actually click to take the picture.
But then again, if you think about it, I'm sure that bigger camera corporations such as Nikon and Canon have thought of doing all these things as well, and they have found that the kind of technology needed is still beyond them. But the simplicity and layout of the camera and it's features is really where Apple would excel in.

2. I'm a photographer.
On even a cheap (relativly) Rebel, the auto focus is fine. There are very few lenses out there that don't have auto-focus, certainly no name brand ones.
If you're too stupid to know what the shutter button looks like, you shouldn't be allowed near technology anyway. Hell, I feel that way about mac users already.
Seriously, how could you make a camera more simple? Point and shoots. You literally point it at something, and it does all the work for you.
Light intake? What are you using? Film? DSLR's come with a light sensor, and can be set to automatically adjust.
Fuck apple. It would just be a camera with a button. It would restrict me from doing anything to adjust white ballence, shutter speed, and countless other things I need to get the damn shot I want.

Just because you set a camera on Auto doesn't mean it's always the best choice. Just yesterday it was sunny out and I was taking pictures using auto and it was setting the exposure and light intake wayyyy to high and everything turned out much brighter than I had wanted.

It was going on throughout the day , sometimes it's just bright out and the auto isn't always the way to go
