It really seems too convoluted for new players to get into. Too many items and hats and shit to keep track of, and only a smallish number of them are actually viable for regular gameplay.

I agree, every update since the Mann. Co update (I don't even care about the micro-transactions, it's the fucking shitty weapons they add) has made the game worse. Everything is either useless or OP. I actually miss Valve time because they actually put thought into this shit. But they haven't completely ruined it yet.
